Tilted Clipboard

Tilted Clipboard

R250

A popular tool in a lot of Occupational therapy practices is the tilted clipboard which is used during writing tasks.

Why do Occupational therapists use it and what are the advantages?

It facilitates and enhances the correct sitting posture.  90-degree angles at the ankles, knees and hips. Wrist extension is necessary for the correct pencil grip which is integral to handwriting.  This encourages a child to use finger movements instead of wrist or elbow movements. Another advantage is that it facilitates visual scanning during writing and reading tasks, which decreases the tension on the child’s eyes. It improves paper stability when a child struggles to keep the page still when he writes.  The child then doesn’t have to focus on holding the page, but solely on his handwriting. It improves shoulder stability which is necessary for handwriting.  An upright body enhances good positioning of the shoulder and elbow.  Poor postural control leads to a child leaning forward over his work. The tilted clipboard is ideal for traveling.  The child can keep it on his lap to colour and write on a stable, flat surface without the paper moving.  It will ensure hours of entertainment on the long road.
